The Lazarus Effect: Fighting HIV/AIDS in Zambia
Another HIV-infected soldier in the war against AIDS is Judith Mumbi, a nurse by training, who joined our group midway through the visit. Judith contracted HIV from her husband, who got it from extramarital sex. Living with the virus led her to seek a position with a CRS partner helping people with AIDS take their medicines and respond properly to opportunistic infections. She believes that her call is not only to treat the sick, but also to challenge cultural norms that allow men to have two or three sexual partners outside of marriage. "As women, we accept this," she said. "My own husband got AIDS and gave it to me. He was in denial. He was in denial until he died."
Meet Zambians from the second chapter of Solidarity Will Transform the World — "The Lazarus Effect: Fighting HIV/AIDS in Zambia." They have emerged from the tomb of certain death to experience new life in body and spirit.
